4-H Create Art Now is an adult helper’s guide to teach drawing, painting, and sculpting to young people. Unique to the curriculum are lessons on artrepreneurship and art show, along with the critiquing and group sharing activities.
The curriculum builds youth skills through creating:
• Critical thinking – strategies for analyzing, comparing, reasoning, and reflecting focus on deciding what to believe or do; discovering meaning; and building connections with past learning.
• Communicating – exchange of thoughts, information, or messages between individuals; verbally sending and receiving information, writing, gestures, and artistic expression.
• Planning and organizing – a method for doing something that has been thought out and how the parts can be gathered and put together.
4-H Create Art Now sets up each lesson with a specific objective to guide the art helper in planning. Each lesson provides art vocabulary along with an element and principle of design, step-by-step directions to do the activity, as well as opportunity to reflect on and apply the learning. Questions under the Reflect and Apply sections help youth give thought to the learning they have experienced and to their artwork. Lessons reference the National Core Visual Arts Standards. Background information is provided in each lesson on techniques, skills, and artists.
The goal is to build art skills and techniques. The adult helper can reinforce art techniques and life skills as the youth work through the creative process. The adult helper can check for skill development and learning using the learning indicators at the end of each lesson.
