Huckleberry, Mountain (20 cui Shrub)
Spring Only Species! Please do not select a fall ship/pick up date with this species or it will be removed from your order.
Mountain Huckleberry, or Black Huckleberry, is an Idaho native and Idaho's state fruit. Long-lived, huckleberry grows slowly to 4-5' tall. It produces a flavorful black to purple fruit that is highly prized by humans and animals. Huckleberry requires moist, well-drained, acidic soil that is high in organic matter and receives lots of sun. Mountain huckleberry also has outstanding fall color with orange to red to maroon hues. Huckleberries require temperatures around freezing in the winter and do best when covered with 1-2’ of snow throughout the winter. This species can be tricky to establish and has not yet been successfully domesticated.
