Dawn redwood is a non-native deciduous conifer and is a fast growing species. The green foliage turns golden then bright orange in autumn before the needles fall off the tree. It has a pyramidal shape that matures into a rounded crown with age. This species likes full sun and moist, deep, well-drained soils. It can easily be damaged by early fall freezes, so plant early in the fall and late spring for the highest chance of survival. This species is a member of the redwood family.
