Cascara Buckthorn is an Idaho native shrub that is also referred to as Cascara sagrada. This large shrub or small tree can be multi-or single stemmed and is found on many different sites including rocky, somewhat dry, southern aspects to shady, swampy riparian areas. With dark, glossy green leaves and umbel-shaped clusters of flowers, this shrub is a subtle addition to the landscape. Producing dark blue/black fruit in the late summer, it’s a favorite for birds and small mammals looking for a food source. Fall foliage color is yellow.
