Black Elderberry is an Idaho native shrub and widely distributed across the western United States. Black Elderberry can be found on many different sites and is commonly used in restoration projects for soil stabilization. Bright white flower clusters make this shrub a great addition to landscaping and attract pollinators. Elderberry is low maintenance and can get bushy but responds well to pruning to keep it in check. The fruit it highly utilized for sauces, jam, wine, or pies.
Note: the berries should be cooked before eaten as they are mildly toxic. The leaves and stems are poisonous and should not be consumed.
