Smooth sumac can be found across the entirety of the United States. Its name derives from the lack of “hair” on all parts of the plant which is distinct from others in its family. Not only is this plant a brilliant landscape ornamental between the unique branched leaves, bright red fruit clusters and vibrant fall colors of yellows, oranges and reds, it's also been extensively utilized by humans for food, medicine, dyes and more. Smooth sumac’s wide range is due to its adaptability to many different sites including clay soils and its deep rooting system helps to survive drought periods.
