Silver maple gets its name from the silvery-white leaf undersides that create a shimmering effect when blowing in the wind. This large maple is great as a shade tree and does well in wet, riparian soils. In the fall, leaf color is primarily yellow with orange and red variability. Growth rates have been seen from 3-7 feet per year on good sites and as such are a great option for fast shade or establishing windbreaks. An ample seed producer, silver maples are great for birds, squirrels and chipmunks.
